Changes in the Protein Profile of Erythrocyte Membrane by Membrane Peroxidation

Abstract
Ascorbic acid and dihydroxyfumaric acid, in the presence of ferrous sulfate, caused a lipid peroxidation in human erythrocyte membrane in vitro. Associated with the membrane lipid peroxidation, the spectrin component in the membrane polypeptides was selectively broken down and a new polypeptide fraction, which is- larger than the spectrin in molecular weight, emerged.
These results suggest that the cytoskeleton of erythrocytes is a primary site of damage caused by membrane lipid peroxidation.
